Citing Books
| General
format: Author(s) name. Title of book. Place of publication [city]: Publishing company, Year. |
While
this general format applies to all types of books, additional
information may be required for some types of books, based on
authorship, number of volumes in a work, and other features.
Some things to pay attention to:
- Number and type of authors: e.g. one author, two or more authors, editor, corporate author.
- Edition of the book: relevant if the book is a 2nd or greater edition
- Chapter within a book: a book chapter is cited differently from an entire book
- Multivolume book: a book with multiple volumes, such as an encyclopedia, is cited differently from a single volume book
- Electronic format: this requires including the electronic location of the book, usually a URL as well as the date accessed. Full-text from an academic database requires inclusion of the database name and location.
The Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) is an excellent resource for learning how to cite sources within a paper or presentation as well as for formatting a bibliography.
