Citing Electronic Resources
Due to the nature of electronic media, references to electronic works must generally provide additional information from what is required in citations for print sources. Often you need to include the date you accessed the source and the electronic location such as a URL. Variations in each type of source influence citation formats.
Some things to pay attention to:
- Web page: also include the web site name, name of institution or organization associated with the site (if any), date of access, URL (web address)
- Electronic correspondence: also include title of correspondence (usually the subject line), description of message, date of correspondence, date accessed, electronic address, if applicable
- DVDs and Music CDs: include title of song or section, title of entire disc, name of artist, editor, or director, medium format, edition, release, or version (if relevant), place of publication, publishing or distributing company, and electronic publication date.
The Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) is an excellent resource for learning how to cite sources within a paper or presentation as well as for formatting a bibliography.
