Focusing Your Topic
Once you've selected a broad topic area, start focusing the topic based on information you already have. Brainstorm a bit and write down a list of words, terms, or phrases that describe your topic or idea.
Think about:
- related issues and aspects of the topic
- unique terminology
- important books or articles about the topic
A concept map allows you to visually represent what you know about your topic. Use the list of words, terms, and phrases from your brainstorming session to build your concept map. Illustrate the relationships of issues to the main idea by drawing a diagram.
Begin by placing the main topic in a central circle. Sub-topics or related topics can be represented with similar circles. Represent the relationships of the main topic to the sub-topics with a line. |
